Meet Martha-San Diego County's First Term School Board Member of the Year 2021

Martha Alvarado is a proud daughter of Mexican immigrants.  She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended public schools in L.A. county and graduated from Hawthorne High School.  She enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and went to boot camp in 1992.

After completing courses to become an Electrical Equipment Repair Specialist at Courthouse Bay, Camp Lejeune, she was stationed at Camp Pendleton.  During her enlistment, Martha was promoted to Sergeant meritoriously, awarded a National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Navy Achievement Medal.

In addition to fulfilling her Marine Corps duties, Martha also attended Palomar College in the evenings. When she completed her enlistment, she graduated with an Associate’s Degree and transferred to California State University San Marcos to continue her education. While attending CSUSM, she participated in a Veterans work-study program at Vietnam Veterans of San Diego tutoring homeless Veterans in literacy and teaching many how to read.

In 1999, Martha graduated with honors from California State University San Marcos, becoming the first in her family to earn a university degree. She continued her education at CSUSM earning a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She has taught in North San Diego County schools for 22 years while upholding many additional leadership roles and in 2013 was selected Teacher of the Year at her school site.

A lifelong learner, Martha returned to her studies in 2015 enrolling in a certificate program at San Diego State University which focused on the Common Core Standards and English Language Learners. This certificate has allowed her to hone her skills as a teacher of English Language Learners and apply current, research-based practices in her classroom.

Martha’s proudest accomplishment is her son Pedro. As a young boy, Pedro loved to play T-ball and baseball which allowed her to be a team mom for North County Bobby Sox and Vista American Little League, a board member of Vista American Little League, as well as serving as a volunteer for Vista High Baseball Boosters. Like his mother, Pedro is a product of public schools. He attended Vista Unified Schools graduating from Vista High School with honors earning a scholarship to Northwestern University. He graduated in June 2018 with academic honors in Anthropology and received his Master's Degree from NYU in 2020.

In her spare time, Martha enjoys spending quality time with her friends and family.  Some of her favorite pastimes include cooking meals for her loved ones, dancing, singing Karaoke, visiting museums, running 5Ks, attending Padres or Aztecs games, and listening to live music. She is a proud auntie who enjoys taking her nieces, Sophia and Marisa, to the zoo, Oceanside beaches, and local theme parks.
